WOLFGANG WEIGEL
For over four decades, Wolfgang Weigel has been a passionate ambassador of Spanish modern guitar music. As both a performer and educator, his multifaceted work has earned him international acclaim.
His love for the guitar was ignited in early childhood. A pivotal moment came in 1968, when a concert by Andrés Segovia inspired him to pursue a life in music. After completing his formal studies, Weigel devoted himself — starting in 1974 — to both teaching and refining his own artistic voice, especially under the guidance of his mentor, Karl Scheit. He soon gained widespread recognition through performances across Europe, the United States, and Latin America.
Weigel’s repertoire spans every era and style of classical guitar music. He is especially known for his interpretation of contemporary works, many of which he has premiered. In addition to his solo career, he is a dedicated chamber musician and frequently appears as a soloist with orchestra.
Since the 1980s, Weigel has focused on championing Spanish music from the post-Franco period, becoming a key voice for the guitar repertoire of 20th-century Spain.
Alongside his work in contemporary music, he is also highly regarded for his deep understanding of historical repertoire, particularly the works of J.S. Bach. This expertise was shaped not only through his studies with Karl Scheit, but also in collaboration with Bach scholars such as Professor Frank-Michael Beyer and composer Ruth Zechlin.
